Reducing waste in the construction sector

The Problem

It’s no secret that construction has traditionally been a high-waste sector. According to the European Commission approximately 25% - 30% of all waste generated in the EU is from demolitions alone.

The materials sent to landfill include:

  • Concrete
  • Bricks
  • Gypsum
  • Wood
  • Glass
  • Metals
  • Plastic

While it’s understandable that some materials won’t be in a condition appropriate for reuse (and others recycled), there are plenty that are.

Ordering surplus materials is also a standard practice across the sector and finding a place for the unused materials at the end of a project can be difficult, often resulting in them ending up as waste.

The Solution

Globechain aims to address both of these issues with a reuse marketplace for listing construction materials and equipment. The items listed on the marketplace often get requested by charities or small businesses that can then go on to use the materials.

When a company lists these surplus materials on Globechain within 24 hours requests occur and they get collected as soon as required. We gather information on where the materials went, what social impact they had, what the weight of the product was and more. You are able to use this data towards your sustainability reports and earn BREEAM (UK) or LEED (Americas) points for your sustainable practices.

What can be listed?

If it could be reused it can be listed on Globechain (with a few exceptions you can read about on our help page). As far as construction materials, we have seen a variety of products listed, for example:

  • Concrete slabs
  • Ceramics (sinks/toilets)
  • Glass panelling
  • Windows
  • Doors and fire doors
  • Flooring (wood/tile)
  • Trim
  • Marble
  • Carpet
  • Lighting
  • Skirting

Globechain was tasked to reuse the existing materials from the defit within the broader total impact objective. 100% of the items listed were collected, totalling over 70,000 kilos of items being diverted from landfill.
